Business Change: The Value Of Staffing Firms In Business Change Management
There are a lot of changes involved in business change but one exception is the use of external staffing. There are a lot of roles external staffers can do and a number of positions they can fill, specifically during business change. Change initiatives are designed to be shorter term projects, but can have skill requirements that are not easily met by internal staffing. This is the specialty of external staffers. They work on a short term contract to help complete a project, usually for business change, and then they leave once they've done what they needed to do and the project is finished. Though external staffing has its fair share of negative criticism, it is likely that external staffing is the wave of the future for business change.
There was a time when the business culture in America was such that a person would be employed by one company for the duration of their career. They would retire from the company with a party and receive a gold watch. There was a mutual expectation of loyalty from employers and employees. A resume showcasing multiple work experiences in different companies was considered a not-so-good sign. The 1980’s is generally considered to be the time when all that changed. Loyalty was't that big of a deal anymore, the stigma began to change, and it signalled the reshaping of America's business culture.
The shift to a corporate policy of downsizing and a consistently transitional environment was painful for long time corporate employees. But despite this negative side of change, American business became even more accomplished and productive. It allows for the redeployment of the workforce faster than anywhere else in the world. These redeployments are not necessarily voluntary, but now people know that it is more likely to indicate a business change than to be perceived as a flaw of personality.
External staffing is at the cutting edge of that stigma transformation. More and more high-level professionals are choosing to go to work for staffing firms rather than seek full time employment with a specific business. There can be genuine financial gain and a more challenging work life in making this choice. It also paves the way for successful business change. Business change is more difficult that running the business. To manage change projects efficiently, it takes a high level of skill and most skillful workers are usually found in external staffing firms.
