Implementing Change: The Other Sort of Coaches In Organization Change
Coaching has multiple meanings in business settings. There are coaches who bring technical knowledge and advice to the table when a company is implementing change. They tend to come out business or technical backgrounds and usually have extensive experience in their field. Then, there's the other sort of coaches. These are the coaches who deal with questions of an individual change nature or talk folk through misgivings they could be having regarding their job. An entire industry has been built up around this other sort of training and it does have a role to play in implementing change.
These kinds of coaches generally come out of a social science background. They could have degrees in psychology or sociology, but it is less frequent for them to come out of business or technical field. The information base that they bring to the table is interpersonal or intrapersonal in nature. While their business knowledge could be rather marginal, they can play a critical role in keeping the private wheels turning while a company is implementing change.
Change of any type is stressful for human beings. This is as true when a company is implementing change as it is when a family has a new baby. There are changes in expectations. There could be new responsibilities. These expectations and responsibilities can engender a hesitation or ill ease in a person. For instance, a manager could find themselves evaluating employees in a new way that threatens to impact those employees in a more basic way.
Coaches that come out of a social science background can help that boss to resolve the mixed feelings they're experiencing. It may be thru listening or by speaking the boss thru what they are feeling. The coach may present the boss with a set of options as way of providing perspective. In a way, these coaches help to keep the unsubstantial private issues from hampering the company even though it is implementing change.
