Reasons Why Many Change Career Later In Life, And The Options On Offer For Making A New Start

In days gone by, people set their sights on a given profession at an early stage, undertook the necessary study for it, and after qualifying remained in that area until their retirement. Conditions have altered over time, with increasing numbers of people changing their career path later in life. Undoubtedly the more advanced in years they are, the tougher it is to adjust to a job requiring a different skillset, yet on the other hand, they probably have a greater amount of savings to assist in tiding them over the likely temporary fall in pay that a change of job necessitates. The new area of Internet business has provided a new type of online jobs, that workers from various walks of life can easily adjust to, not least because they allow people to work from home.

There may be a variety of reasons why people decide to leave their current occupation. Some people may have been coerced by their elders into choosing a given line of work, for instance, a son has to adopt his father’s profession. In many cases it is not something they really enjoy doing, so later on, they might decide move to the job they really desire to work in. For some the strategy is to take up a normal 9-5 occupation, and pursue their genuine area of interest – in antiques or acting, for instance – in the evening. In the rare cases where they achieve fame and fortune, they are free to discard their former occupation.

A more familiar motive these days, is that someone finds out that in reality they don’t take pleasure in their chosen occupation. Perhaps things didn’t turn out the way they hoped for. For instance, I have come across many formerly in the teaching profession who opted to pursue other occupations due to the levels of unruly behaviour in modern classrooms.

Money may also be a factor. There are certain jobs that are extremely interesting, for instance in research science, but the pay rates are low and the jobs are insecure, often on short term contracts. For someone who is required to support children, the lure of a more lucrative career in a more workaday field is difficult to resist. The way someone has expressed it to myself, job fulfilment is all very well, but it’s not much good when you are trying to raise a family on less than £20,000 a year and your kids need food and clothing. On the other hand, some people leave well-paid careers to be able to accept a less remunerative yet more satisfying job, or to allow them to work from home and cut out the stress of city life.

An all too frequent and unanticipated cause of a career move is losing your job. Those who are made redundant can take the chance to make use of their redundancy package to set up their own business. Sometimes it may be related to whatever they were doing in their previous jobs, on other occasions it could be something completely different. By way of example, someone I know, laid off from a managerial job, started his own antiques shop.

Following the invention of the Internet, there is a huge variety of Internet business opportunities that can be taken up by people looking for a change in career or who are out of work and can’t get another job in their previous line of work. These may be described as ‘online jobs’ since they enable people to work from home and connect to customers via the Internet. Many without previous IT experience might be afraid that they don’t have sufficient IT skills to avail themselves of these jobs, however training is available and many are surprised at how easily they pick up the new skills. In cases where people are unhappy in their present career and want a career change, or have little chance of getting another job in their old line of work and are looking for new career paths, the online jobs available in Internet business can give people a genuine opportunity to start again.
