Saying Farewell To The Long Commute To Work: Everything You Need For A Successful Home Office
Vizualise the scene. Another busy weekday at the office. Your telephone keeps ringing, the printer is producing your documents, the fax machine is busy, you’re typing away on your computer. Following a few hours of hard slog, you choose to take some time off, and walk out of your office … into your own home.
In reality, with access to modern communications and Internet business, it is now quite possible to work from home . The view from your office is not a busy street, but your back garden. What you hear there are not cars and lorries and horns being blown, but birds singing.
If that seems to youan attractive proposition, then you should bear in mind that the appearance of online jobs makes this a perfectly realistic ideal. You can run a profitable Internet business from the surroundings of your own house, leaving out the strain and hassle of travelling to some faraway office.
Even so, there are some points that you have to take into account if you want to successfully work from home. It is vital to begin with that establish a ‘home office’, a place in your home dedicated to business and having all the appropriate office equipment required to get your job done, no less than if you are in business premises.
Some years ago, I worked as a temp for a number of different companies, and once I got sent to one company by my agency. When I got there, I found a standard semi-detached house, so assumed I had been given the wrong address. However, somebody emerged from the front door and told me I was in the right location. This company had turned the entire ground floor of the house into office space. The chances are you won’t need to go to those lengths to work from home; but even so it is best to reserve one room for use in your business. For example, I own a three-bedroomed house, but one bedroom contains no bed as I have made it into a fully-equipped office for working in.
It is also advisable that other family members understand you need to work uninterrupted. There is a convention that personal calls, unless for emergencies, are not allowed in a working office. Why should the rule be any different when you work in online jobs running an Internet business? Your wife or husband and your children must be made to realise that they must not interrupt you. It could be a particular issue should you have young children who continually need your attention!
There is a different form of intrusion over which you have less control – the callers at the door. These may be people plugging something, doing an opinion poll, offering to tidy your garden, or offering religious advice. Even if you ask them to go away, their call can break your concentration and make you less productive. A poster in your doorway saying you won’t accept anything from doorstep canvassers may dissuade many, but ultimately it won’t stop them all. This drawback has to be weighed against the undoubted benefits for those who work from home.
Self-discipline is also important if you work in online jobs. Without a manager looking over your shoulder, it is essential that you concentrate on the Internet business you are paid for instead of catching up on the latest gossip personal email and blogs. You can select your own hours, but you must stick to them for business purposes.
And if perchance you are similar to me, make certain you keep lots of coffee to maintain your alertness throughout the working day!
