<p>For a lot of people, growing up was an unpleasant experience due to the shame their parents or others dumped onto them.  They learn early in life that the world is a very scary and dangerous place to live.</p>
<p>When you&#039;re at that age, and those huge people called &#039;grown-ups&#039; dump their  shame onto you, that will cause you to feel fear.  Sometimes a lot of fear.  </p>
<p>So does that mean shame always leads to panic?  No.  Shame may take many directions and involve many different manifestations.  I believe there will always be fear with shame, but that doesn&#039;t mean there has to be panic attacks.</p>
<p>And to turn the question around, does panic always start with shame?  Most likely.  It&#039;s hard for me to imagine a person experiencing panic attacks when they had no problem with shame as a child. </p>
<p>I know I began with a foundation of shame.  Which meant I lacked security in my life.  <strong>Because when you are immersed with shame, you never feel true security.</strong>  Shame steals your security.  This will tend to make you afraid.  Which forms the foundation for future panic attacks.</p>
<p><strong>2. Repressing The Fear</strong></p>
<p>I learned early in life that it&#039;s not socially acceptable to admit you feel fear.  You&#039;re supposed to not feel your fear.  Be a brave little boy or girl.  I was conditioned to stuff down my fears.  &#034;Don&#039;t be afraid&#034;.</p>
<p><strong>But I am afraid!</strong>  The world is so huge while I am so tiny.  Events that grown-ups can brush off seem way too heavy for me.  I&#039;m much too young to realize what&#039;s going on.  I barely know how things work.  There&#039;s so much I don&#039;t know.  And therefore the fear continues to grow.</p>
<p>Childhood is naturally scary, but I don&#039;t want to feel the fear!  Which means I&#039;ll push as much fear as possible away from me and into my shadow.  Unfortunately, at some point I&#039;ll be forced to come to terms with that fear.  </p>
<p><strong>Either I go to my shadow directly and handle it there, or else I&#039;ll have to deal with it in the world.</strong></p>
<p>I can only keep the fear repressed for so long.  Sooner or later, it will rise up. I&#039;ll find myself in situations that scare me half to death.  Or else the fear will seem to come out of nowhere.</p>
<p>And the whole time, the shadow is just doing its job.  It holds onto all the stuff I don&#039;t want to deal with.  It keeps all the fear safe for me, and then gives it all back to me later in life. Of course, it often explodes in my face when it happens.</p>

<p>&#034;There must be something wrong or else I wouldn&#039;t be experiencing all this fear.&#034;</p>
<p>The fear story traps you.   You&#039;re stuck in fear.  It doesn&#039;t end.  It wears you down.  Plus it&#039;s way too easy to rationalize the fear.  You end up managing fear instead of feeling it.  Or most likely, you <em>try</em> to manage it.</p>
<p><strong>You try to think your way out of feeling.</strong>  And that can&#039;t end well.  Panic basically exists as a fear story that&#039;s gotten way out of hand.</p>
<p>So far we&#039;ve got shame, repressed emotion, and fear stories that all join together to cause panic attacks.  But there&#039;s more.  There&#039;s a glue that holds it all together.</p>
<p><strong>4. The &#039;Panicked&#039; Me</strong></p>
