The Neccesity Of Doing Your Homework When Taking Up A Franchise And Why You Only Get One Go At This.
The Franchise business model is currently having something of a boom in the UK. Just try typing in “Franchise For Sale” intoan internet search engine and you will, quite literally, be overloaded with data on the hundreds of Franchises that are offered on the Franchise For Sale market within the UK and Internationally
There are many dozens, even thousands of Franchises currently available within the UK. That on its own is rather a testimony to the way this market has grown within the last [couple of decades. There are also scores of franchise based websites which will, if you give them your email address, shower you with franchise business on a regular basis. Everything from a full, large scale business with vehicles, premises, property and stock right down to a more simple Home Based Franchise which may even be able to be undertaken on a part time basis.
A good starting point to help you with your appraisal of a franchise opportunity is to look at the website of the BFA – the British Franchise Association (http://www.thebfa.org/) . This body has strict rules on how a franchise should behave with respect to the organisation itself and how it treats its individual business owners. Not all Franchises are listed here though and the BFA has at least two levels of affiliation one with higher set of rules and regulations than the other. It’s noted that most of the full BFA associates seem to charge a large initial investment fee and maybe there is a lesson to be learned here.
Investments vary considerably from a couple of thousand pounds to exceeding a hundred thousand pounds or more. This statistic by itself is quite a good indicator of where a potential franchisee should consider his or her self within the market place. A common level of investment is around the sixteen thousand pound mark, maybe varying up to over twenty thousand pounds. This is a reliable level below which you would be in the sort of territory of the less developed Franchises, not to say there are not some good opportunities in this part of the franchise market.
For most of us though ,this is a life altering sum to invest so it’s vital to research the franchise package from all points of view by all the means you have available. This includes, patently, the Internet , magazines, user discussion forums and newspapers. Also don’t forget personal recommendation. A friend or relative may have heard gossip about, say , an excellent Home Based Franchise that would fit you down to a Tee. Or possibly someone within your social circle will have heard something bad about a franchise or may have employed a Franchises’ services and been disappointed. Or even they may have a viewpoint on why franchising in general may not be for you. It’s quite likely that you will only get one shot at your chosen franchise because of the level of investment demanded, both in the initial franchise fee and in the commitment in terms of of time and effort that you will need to put into getting the business off the ground.
Another important point to consider is that a number of Franchises carry an additional cost. There may well be an ongoing monthly fee that is payable regardless of the number of customers you have to service or sales you achieve. This is a bit of an eye opener when you add it up for the term of the commitment as in the initial stages not only will you in all likelyhood be supporting yourself and maybe your family while the franchise builds up, but you may be paying this ongoing fee as well.
This is why the choice of franchise is incredibly important and time must be taken over your purchase. The worst case scenario is quite bleak as you could be stuck in a business doing a job you don’t really enjoy after having spent a considerable sum of money and you are contractually bound to pay the franchise organization an ongoing fee for the foreseeable future.
